What is open and closed in HRM for Canada Day 2023
Can’t remember what’s open or closed in HRM on Canada Day? Here’s a list of what’s open and closed on Saturdays.
If you need groceries:
- Major food retail chains, including Atlantic Superstore, Sobeys, Walmart and Costco, will be closed.
- Gateway Meat Market in Dartmouth and Kingswood Market in Hammonds Plains are among the smaller stores open.
- The city’s larger farmer’s markets – the Seaport and Brewery Markets in Halifax and the Alderney Market in Dartmouth – are open Canada Day.
If you want wine, beer or spirits:
- All NSLC stores are closed.
- Harvest Wines & Spirits, RockHead Wine and Beer Market, and WestSide Beer Wine Spirits are open from noon to 8 p.m. Bishop’s Cellar is open from 10am to 11pm.
- Most craft liquor makers have their taprooms and/or storefronts open on Saturdays.
Shopping centers and retail: Major retailers and malls are closed on Saturday, but open for the rest of the holiday weekend.
Drugstores: Many drugstores are open on Saturdays, but hours may vary.
Getting around by bus or ferry: Buses and ferries run on one holiday schedule Saturday and travel on the Alderney ferry is free. The Woodside Ferry is taking the day off.
Halifax Public Libraries: All Halifax Public Libraries branches and departments are closed on both Canada Day and Monday. Due to the summer closures on Sundays, many branches are closed for three days.
Halifax Waste: Regular household waste collection will not be affected.
The Bayers Lake Specialty Waste Depot is closed on Saturdays, but will be open the following Saturday, July 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Otter Lake Waste Management Facility and Materials Recovery Facility will be closed on July 1, but will be open at regular hours on Mondays.
A mobile depot for special household waste will be held at the BMO Center at 61 Gary Martin Dr., Bedford on Saturday, July 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Recreation facilities: Bedford and Cole Harbor outdoor pools and all patrolled municipal beaches are open on Canada Day seasonally.
Bayers-Westwood, George Dixon, Isleville Street, Cole Harbour, Shirley’s, Westmount and Sackville splash pads opened for the season two weeks ago.
The Emera Oval is open from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM and free loaner bikes/trikes, inline and roller skates, scooters, and skateboards are available, weather permitting.
Most municipal facilities are closed on both Canada Day and Mondays, with the exception of Sackville Sports Stadium, which is open on Mondays. Call your local center for more info.

Customer Contact Centers: The 311 contact center will be closed for full service on Saturday, but urgent calls can still be reported. Regular activities will resume on Sunday. The physical centers are closed on Monday. Residents can contact 311 by phone or by email at [email protected] .
Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Response: Consumer fireworks are allowed on Canada Day, but HRM is asking residents to attend a professional display instead. If you plan to venture out on your own, check this out fire restriction guidelines (updated daily at 2pm). If there is a fire ban in place, fireworks are not allowed and you risk a hefty fine.
