New Glasgow man arrested after high-speed incident involving stolen vehicle on highway in Bedford
HALIFAX, N.S. — A 31-year-old New Glasgow man is facing multiple charges following a high-speed incident involving a stolen vehicle on Highway 102 in Bedford on Aug. 2.
Halifax Regional Police received a report around 8 p.m. of an assault taking place in a speeding vehicle on the highway near Hammonds Plains Road.
RCMP officers responded and found a Dodge Ram near the Fall River exit and noticed a woman who was a passenger in the truck in distress.
Mounties tried to stop the vehicle, but police said the driver refused to stop, and officers decided against a chase in the interest of public safety.
About a half-hour later, officers found the vehicle at a gas station near the highway in Stewiacke. The man, who was out of his vehicle, jumped back in when officers tried to arrest him and sped off, heading north on Highway 102.
Minutes later, police said the truck veered off the road and landed in a ditch as the driver tried to avoid spike belts. Both the driver and the woman ran from the area.
Officers apprehended the driver without incident in a nearby wooded area. The woman was not found.
An investigation revealed that the Dodge Ram had been reported stolen in Shelburne County the day before.
Tayler Richard Malcolm is facing charges of flight from police, dangerous operation of a conveyance, possession of property obtained by crime and failure to comply with conditions of a release order.
Malcolm was held in custody to appear in Dartmouth court on Thursday, Aug. 3.
Police are looking to speak with the woman who fled. The victim, or anyone who knows the victim of the assault, is asked to call the police at 902-490-5020 or tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
