Windsor Teen’s Viral Post Puts Windsor-Style Pizza on the Map
A Windsor teenager’s social media post showcasing a unique Windsor pizza topping has taken the internet by storm, sparking a global interest in Windsor-style pizza.
Aden Unger, an 18-year-old resident of Windsor, shared a photo of a pizza topped with Windsor’s signature shredded pepperoni on the social media platform X on October 28.
Unaware of the city’s pizza tradition, Unger wrote in his post, “Fun fact about Ontario (where I live) is that we shred our pepperoni before putting it on pizza.”
The post gained traction quickly, garnering hundreds of likes and eventually reaching millions of engagements.
“I had no idea that Windsor was so unique,” Unger expressed in response to the overwhelming attention his post received.
With over 12 million views and counting, Unger’s post has sparked a lively online debate about Windsor-style pizza, with some expressing skepticism and others praising the shredded pepperoni topping.
Dean Litster, owner of Armando’s Pizza in Amherstburg and Leamington, noted the growing popularity of Windsor’s shredded pepperoni topping, especially in the United States.
Litster attributes this rise in popularity to the recent documentary “The Pizza City You’ve Never Heard Of,” which shed light on Windsor’s unique pizza culture.
Describing the shredded pepperoni as a time-saving measure for pizzerias, Litster emphasized the importance of Windsor-style pizza’s distinctive elements, including cornmeal under the crust and a combination of shredded pepperoni, mushrooms, and cheese.
As an experienced pizza maker, Litster views crafting Windsor-style pizza as an art form, likening the dough to a canvas on which he can create a culinary masterpiece.
Meanwhile, Unger hopes that his viral post will inspire more people to sample Windsor’s one-of-a-kind pizza style for themselves.
“I’d recommend, like, hey, come on over, come try. It’s worth it,” Unger encouraged.
