Amherst police seize drugs, weapons, contraband cigarettes in traffic stop, two arrested

AMHERST, N.S. — Police arrested a 29-year-old woman and 56-year-old man after seizing weapons and drugs in an Amherst traffic stop on Saturday, Feb. 3.

At about 8 a.m. on West Pleasant Stree, a car “driving in an abnormal manner” was stopped by an Amherst Police Department officer, who then discovered the car with vehicle equipment issues and an expired registration.

Police say the driver, a woman from Cumberland County, was allegedly exhibiting signs of impairment and drug paraphernalia was evident, resulting in her arrest. A subsequent search turned up cocaine, unstamped tobacco, weapons and “other evidence of criminal activity.”

She was charged with impaired driving, trafficking cocaine, forgery and weapon charges and was later released on conditions and with a future court date.

Her passenger, an Amherst man, was found breaching the conditions of his release. He now faces five counts of breaches of his release order and one count of possessing property obtained by crime.

He was remanded into custody to appear in court at a later date.
