Andrew Atherton appointed as new auditor general for the Halifax Regional Municipality

HALIFAX, N.S. — The Halifax Regional Council has appointed Andrew Atherton as the city’s new auditor general.

Atherton has more than 25 years of experience in performance auditing, with 15 of those spent in leadership roles with the legislative audit and public service domain.

Before his current role as executive director of the Department of Municipal Affairs and Housing with the provincial government, Atherton worked with the Nova Scotia Office of the Auditor General, serving as audit principal from 2007 to 2016), at which time he advanced to assistant AG where he served until last year.

During his time, he spearheaded various critical audits, such as the Nominee Program at the Office of Immigration; Pandemic Preparedness and Infection Prevention; and Control at Cape Breton and Capital Health.

His involvement also extended to assessing the planning and execution of Nova Scotia’s Pre-Primary program.

Atherton will assume the office on Dec. 5.
