NFL trade rumors: Rams’ Matthew Stafford wants $50 million to play in 2025

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is reportedly looking to be paid more heading into his 17th season in the NFL. According to NFL Network’s Peter Schrager, Stafford and the Rams have a good relationship, but the issue at hand is a financial one. Stafford is seeking to be among the top-paid quarterbacks in the league, aiming for a salary of more than $50 million.
Despite being under contract for another two seasons, the Rams have given Stafford permission to explore contract discussions with other teams this offseason. Several quarterback-needy teams, including the New York Giants, Cleveland Browns, Las Vegas Raiders, and Pittsburgh Steelers, have reached out to Stafford. These teams are reportedly willing to offer him a higher salary than what the Rams are currently willing to pay.
Stafford carries a hefty cap hit of $49.67 million for the 2025 season, which increases to $53.67 million in 2026, as reported by Spotrac. The Giants, who hold the No. 3 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, could be a potential trade partner for Stafford. However, it is unlikely that they would part ways with their top pick, but a second-round selection could be on the table.
The Steelers, who made the playoffs last season with different quarterbacks under center, could be interested in acquiring Stafford to make a playoff run. The Browns, dealing with uncertainty at the quarterback position due to Deshaun Watson’s injury, and the Raiders, in a rebuilding phase under new coach Pete Carroll, are also potential landing spots for Stafford.
Despite the trade talks, Schrager noted that the relationship between Stafford and the Rams remains intact, leaving room for a potential resolution. With only nine other quarterbacks set to make $50 million or more in 2025, Stafford’s salary demands put him among the highest-paid players at his position in the league.
In addition to the contract negotiations with Stafford, the Rams have also made it known that veteran wide receiver Cooper Kupp is on the trade block. Kupp, a trusted target of Stafford, is expected to be traded once a suitable package is presented. The team has young talent in Puka Nacua but faces uncertainty with the potential departure of other receivers like Demarcus Robinson and Tutu Atwell.
As the offseason progresses, it remains to be seen whether Stafford will remain with the Rams or find a new home with one of the interested teams. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story in the NFL.
