Mboko attracts veteran Krejcikova for opening US Open

The upcoming US Open promises to be an exciting one for Canadian tennis fans, as rising star Victoria Mboko faces off against two-time Grand Slam winner Barbora Krejcikova in the opening round. Mboko, who recently celebrated her 19th birthday, is ranked 22nd in the women’s category and is coming off a big win at the National Bank Open in Montreal.

In the meantime, fellow Canadians Leylah Fernandez and Felix Auger-Aliassime have also received favorable first-round matchups in the tournament. Fernandez, the second seed in last year’s US Open, is seeded 31st this year and is looking to continue her strong season with a victory in Washington, DC last month.

Auger-Aliassime, a semi-finalist at the American Open in 2021, will be looking to bounce back from early exits in his last two events. The 21-year-old has already won two titles this year and reached the quarterfinals at the Cincinnati Open earlier this month.

On the men’s side, Denis Shapovalov, the 27th seed from Richmond Hill, Ont., will face off against Marton Fucsovics in his opening match. Shapovalov has had a successful season with two titles to his name and will be looking to improve on his first-round exit from last year’s US Open.

In the women’s qualifying rounds, Rebecca Marino from Vancouver is one step closer to securing a spot in the main draw after a hard-fought victory on Thursday. Unfortunately, Carol Zhao from Richmond Hill and the Cadansbrace of Toronto were both eliminated in the second round of qualifying.

Overall, Canadian tennis fans have plenty to look forward to at this year’s US Open, with a strong contingent of players ready to make their mark on the tournament. Stay tuned for all the action as the competition heats up at Flushing Meadows.
