Ford defends his anti-tariff trip to Washington amid criticism from campaign rivals

Progressive Conservative Leader Doug Ford made headlines on Tuesday as he traveled to Washington, D.C., to advocate against U.S. tariffs that have been imposed on steel and aluminum imports, including those from Canada. While Ford was in the U.S. capital, the other major parties in Ontario continued their campaigning efforts across the province.

Ford, in his capacity as premier of Ontario and chair of the Council of the Federation, emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong relationship between Canada and the United States. He highlighted the potential economic chaos that could result from the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, despite recent agreements to delay the implementation of these tariffs.

During his visit, Ford engaged in discussions with key figures in the Trump administration, including Doug Burgum, U.S. Secretary of the Interior, and Howard Lutnick, the president’s pick for commerce secretary. These conversations aimed to convey the message that Canada and the U.S. are stronger together and to address the negative impact of tariffs on both sides of the border.

While Ford’s trip to Washington received mixed reactions, with some opposition leaders criticizing it as inappropriate during an election period, Ford defended his actions, stating that it was essential to address the tariff issue directly with American lawmakers. Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie raised concerns about Ford violating the caretaker convention by engaging in such activities during an election.

Meanwhile, NDP Leader Marit Stiles and Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie outlined their plans to support young people in Ontario amidst the affordability crisis. Crombie proposed initiatives such as eliminating interest on student loans, creating paid internships, and making student residences more affordable. Stiles focused on rent control, converting student loans into grants, and increasing funding for post-secondary institutions.
