Striking school counselors in the Halifax area have voted in favor of a contract agreement and will return to work on Monday, the Halifax Regional Center for Education has announced.

The job action by 1,800 early childhood educators, education program assistants and other support staff followed a member vote last month to reject an earlier tentative agreement recommended by CUPE.

While the local unions of the county’s other regional education centers accepted that deal, members of CUPE Local 5047 who live in the Halifax area said the three-year pay raise didn’t make up for the increased cost of living they’ve faced in recent years.

Details of the new contract have not been released.
