N.S. most expensive: This is how much tuition for Canadians and international students has gone up this year

Regardless of if you are in university, thinking about going to university, or paying for someone’s tuition – it’s always getting more expensive.

The latest yearly report from Statistics Canada on tuition fees shows that the average yearly cost for Canadian undergraduates has increased to $7,076, up 2.9 per cent from the 2022-2023 academic year. International undergraduates, meanwhile, have seen their tuition increased by an average 6.3 per cent.

Nova Scotia was again the most expensive province for undergraduates in Canada, sitting at $9,575 for the 2023-24 academic year.

Saskatchewan was second on the list, at $9,232 for this academic year, up 4.4 per cent from 2022-23.

New Brunswick rounded out the top three most expensive provinces to study in Canada, at $8,706 for the current year.

Ontario remained fourth by province, sitting at $8,190 for 2023-24. The province’s year-over-year increase was $94, coming after a third consecutive year of tuition freezing by the Ontario government.

Tuition for international undergraduates in Nova Scotia marked the largest increase in the latest report, coming in at an average cost of $25,521, up nearly 18 per cent from last year. Saskatchewan’s international undergraduate fees came in at an average of $27,781. In New Brunswick, international tuition costs an average of $17,800.

Ontario’s international tuition fees sit at an average of $46,433 for the 2023-24 academic year, making it the most expensive province to study for international students in Canada.

Quebec has the cheapest undergraduate tuition in Canada, at $3,461 for the current academic year, however, for many, that’s about to change. Beginning next year, out-of-province undergraduates will have to pay $17,000 for one academic year, according to the Coalition Avenir Québec government.

With the forthcoming tuition hikes to Quebec postsecondary institutions, attending university in Quebec would overtake Nova Scotia as the most expensive undergraduate province for non-Quebec residents.
