Colorado lawmaker latest Democrat to visit El Salvador supporting deported illegal migrant Abrego Garcia

Rep. Maxine Dexter, a Democratic congresswoman from Colorado, has announced her plans to travel to El Salvador to advocate for the release of deported illegal migrant Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia. This decision comes on the heels of Sen. Chris Van Hollen’s visit to the South American country earlier this week, where he met with Abrego Garcia at the “Terrorism Confinement Center” (CECOT) megaprison.

Dexter expressed her concerns about the situation, stating, “A legal U.S. resident has had his due process rights ripped away and is now being held indefinitely in a foreign prison. This is not just one family’s nightmare; it is a constitutional crisis that should outrage every single one of us. I will travel to El Salvador to confront this crisis head-on. Our constitutional rights are on the line.”

The case of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia has sparked a divide between Democrats and Republicans. The Trump administration argues that Abrego Garcia is a member of the MS-13 gang, suspected of human trafficking, and has a history of domestic abuse. However, Democrats claim that he is a hard-working Maryland resident who has been unfairly stripped of his due process rights.

The Supreme Court has acknowledged that Abrego Garcia was subject to a withholding order in 2019, preventing his removal to El Salvador, making his deportation illegal. Despite this, the Trump administration maintains that he was correctly removed and is a member of the notorious MS-13 gang.

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller has defended the deportation of Abrego Garcia, citing court findings that deemed him an MS-13 gang member. Critics, including Republicans and Trump allies, have questioned the advocacy efforts for Abrego Garcia while remaining silent on victims of illegal immigration, such as Rachel Morin, a Maryland woman who was murdered by an illegal immigrant in 2023.

The White House released a split-screen image to highlight the differing viewpoints on illegal immigration, featuring Angel Mom Patty Morin, mother of Rachel Morin, being comforted by President Trump, alongside Sen. Chris Van Hollen sitting with Abrego Garcia in El Salvador. The caption emphasized the contrast between the two parties’ stances on the issue.

Rep. Maxine Dexter’s upcoming trip to El Salvador signifies her commitment to advocating for the rights of deported illegal migrants like Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia. The complex case continues to raise questions about due process, immigration policies, and the treatment of individuals with alleged gang affiliations.
