Three in custody after sensory irritant sprayed inside Upper Tantallon school

RCMP have three young people in custody after a fight ended with one of them releasing a sensory irritant inside Bay View High School in Upper Tantallon

Cpl. Guillaume Tremblay said police, paramedics and firefighters were called to the school at about 9:30 a.m. after the incident. The school remained in a hold and secure until as12:15 p.m.as police continued their investigation.

“The irritants would stay inside in the air for quite a while, you want to make sure students and staff are not  going though the affected areas until it has been fully ventilated,” Tremblay said.

He said two teens attacked a third oustide the school, and the fracas moved inside. At that point, the third teen used the irritant. 

He was charged with assault with a weapon, while the other two were charged with assault.

Tremblay said the incident “was targeted in nature.”

He said other people were affected by the spray.

The public and parents were asked to stay away from the school to allow EHS and firefighters to treat the people who were affected. Tremblay wasn’t aware of anyone being transported to hospital.

No serious injuries were reported. Tremblay didn’t have an estimate on how many people were affected.
