Why the drought is good — or bad — news for some Nova Scotia businesses

Nova Scotia’s hot and dry weather is impacting businesses that rely on the outdoors in various ways. While some are experiencing negative effects, others are finding unexpected benefits.

Daniel Booth, owner of White Rock Rentals in Wolfville, has had to shut down his tubing rentals due to low water levels in the Gaspereau River. This has significantly impacted his revenue, as tubing rentals make up over half of his annual income. To adapt to fluctuating river conditions, Booth started offering kayak rentals as well. However, this year’s prolonged dry spell has posed a greater challenge than usual.

According to the Canadian Drought Monitor, most of Nova Scotia is facing moderate to severe drought conditions as of July 31. This has forced businesses like White Rock Rentals to innovate and find alternative ways to attract customers.

On the other hand, Derek MacKinnon, head professional at KenWo Golf Club in New Minas, has seen a surge in business due to the dry weather. The course has been consistently busy, with golfers enjoying the extra bounce and distance on their shots. While the grass has suffered and turned brown, recent cooler weather has helped it recover.

Despite the challenges posed by the drought, Steven Ells, a vineyard owner in Canning, is optimistic about the quality of this year’s grape harvest. The hot and dry conditions have led to smaller grapes, which he believes will enhance the flavor of the wine produced. Ells anticipates a banner year for quality and is looking forward to a successful harvest season.

Overall, businesses in Nova Scotia are navigating the effects of the hot and dry weather in different ways. While some are facing setbacks, others are finding opportunities for growth and innovation. As the province continues to experience drought conditions, adaptation and resilience will be key for outdoor-based businesses to thrive.
