Zelenskyy meets with Rubio, Vance in Rome

Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently met with Ukrainian President Vlodomyr Zelenskyy in Rome for ongoing peace talks amidst the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. The discussions centered around the negotiations in Istanbul, where a low-level Russian delegation was present. Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s readiness for real diplomacy and stressed the importance of a full and unconditional ceasefire.

During the meeting, various topics were addressed, including sanctions against Russia, bilateral trade, defense cooperation, the battlefield situation, and an upcoming prisoners exchange. Zelenskyy underscored the need for continued pressure on Russia until they are willing to halt the war. Additionally, discussions focused on joint efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace.

The meeting took place in Rome as world leaders gathered for Pope Leo XIV’s inaugural mass at the Vatican. Vance led the U.S. delegation, while Zelenskyy also attended the mass. This meeting followed the first direct peace talks between Russian and Ukrainian officials in years, which took place in Istanbul last week without reaching a ceasefire agreement.

Despite the lack of a ceasefire, Russia and Ukraine did agree to a significant prisoner swap during the talks. President Donald Trump expressed his desire to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the war and announced plans for a phone call with Putin and Zelenskyy, as well as NATO leaders, to continue working towards a peace deal.

As negotiations continue, Trump remains hopeful for a productive day and a ceasefire to end the violent conflict that has claimed the lives of many soldiers. The international community remains engaged in efforts to bring about a resolution to the conflict and ensure peace in the region.
