13-year-old Sask. tennis sensation smashes her way to 3rd national title

Isabella Ruyu Yan may appear cute and sweet with her braces and small stature, but once she steps onto the tennis court, her laser focus and competitive spirit shine through. At just 13 years old, this young player from Regina has already clinched three national titles in a row: U12 in 2023, U14 in 2024, and most recently, the U16 national title, defeating opponents who are older and bigger than her.

Reflecting on her recent victory, Yan expressed her disbelief at winning the U16 nationals, stating, “I never thought I could win nationals at the start, but the moment you win that last shot, it’s amazing. I love the feeling of winning.” Despite her small stature, Yan exudes confidence and is not easily intimidated by her larger competitors.

Yan’s parents, particularly her father Sam Zhao, have been her biggest supporters. Zhao describes his daughter as his “little sweetheart” but also acknowledges her ferocity on the court, noting that she always aims to hit the ball hard. He has made significant sacrifices, working two jobs in paratransit and trucking to support Yan’s training and competition expenses.

Yan’s coach, Marek Nehasil, plays a crucial role in her development as a player. While there are areas for improvement, Nehasil believes that Yan’s next step is to compete internationally to earn International Tennis Federation (ITF) points and participate in higher-level tournaments. Both of Yan’s parents credit Nehasil for her progress and success.

Despite her young age, Yan has already secured a sponsorship with sports brand Head, with hopes of partnering with Nike in the future. Her father is confident in her potential, stating, “This young lady, I guarantee you, in less than three years, you will see her on national TV.” Yan expresses gratitude for her father’s unwavering support, acknowledging his presence through her highs and lows.
