16 billion passwords exposed in ‘mother of all’ data breaches

Cybersecurity researchers have recently made a shocking discovery, labeling it as the “mother of all breaches” due to the exposure of over 16 billion individual records. This massive breach includes a collection of 30 databases containing passwords for various government accounts, as well as popular websites such as Apple, Google, Facebook, and Telegram.

The databases, which were uncovered by Cybernews, contained a mix of old and recent infostealer logs, indicating that cybercriminals may have compiled the data using malware designed to steal information. Some databases had generic names like ‘logins’ or ‘credentials,’ making it challenging for the researchers to determine the exact contents. However, other databases provided clues about the origin of the data.

While the information was only briefly available on the internet before being secured, it is unclear who was behind the breach. The records found in these databases could potentially compromise the accounts of billions of internet users worldwide. As a precaution, users are advised to change their passwords immediately to prevent cybercriminals from gaining access to their personal data.

One particularly alarming discovery was a database containing 184 million records that had been previously uncovered by security researcher Jeremiah Fowler. This database contained login information for millions of individuals, including stolen account details linked to numerous governments across the globe.

Fowler identified 220 email addresses with .gov domains among a sample of 10,000 stolen accounts, connecting them to over 29 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, China, India, Israel, and Saudi Arabia. This revelation underscores the severity of the breach and the potential risks associated with such a large-scale data exposure.
