17 hospitalized in salmonella outbreak linked to mini pastries

The Public Health Agency of Canada has issued a warning regarding a recent outbreak of salmonella cases across the country. A total of 61 cases have been reported, with 17 individuals requiring hospitalization due to the illness. These cases have been linked to the consumption of recalled mini pastries from the Sweet Cream brand.

According to the agency, the contaminated pastries have been distributed at various establishments including bakeries, hotels, restaurants, cafeterias, hospitals, retirement residences, and catered events. The outbreak has affected individuals in different provinces, with Quebec reporting 33 cases, Ontario with 21 cases, British Columbia with four cases, Alberta with two cases, and one case in New Brunswick. The affected individuals range in age from three to 88 years old, with a majority of them being female.

The illnesses reported occurred between late September 2024 and mid-December 2024, with many of the affected individuals reporting consuming the mini pastries at catered events or other establishments where the recalled product was served. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a recall for Sweet Cream mini patisserie four-kilogram boxes and one-kilogram trays with best before dates ranging from June 17, 2025, to November 15, 2025.

Symptoms of salmonella infection include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. While healthy individuals may experience short-term symptoms, the infection can be more severe for young children, pregnant individuals, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

CBC News has reached out to Importations Piu Che Dolci, the importer of the Sweet Cream product, for further information on the situation. It is crucial for individuals who may have consumed the recalled mini pastries to monitor their health and seek medical attention if they experience any symptoms of salmonella infection.
