2 B.C. businesses get a new lease on life as local cafe owners buy Molly’s Reach

An Iconic Building on B.C.’s Sunshine Coast Finds New Life with Black Bean Cafe

Molly’s Reach, a beloved landmark on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia, is set to be revitalized thanks to the efforts of the owners of Black Bean Cafe. Made famous by the CBC television series Beachcombers, which aired from 1972 to 1990, Molly’s Reach has been vacant since 2023 when the original owners retired and put the restaurant up for sale, hoping to pass on the legacy.

The new owners of Black Bean Cafe, David and Becca Bristow, found themselves in need of a new location after learning that the lease on their current spot along Marine Drive would end in January. This unexpected turn of events led them to explore other options, ultimately leading them to Molly’s Reach.

David Bristow shared with CBC’s The Early Edition that Black Bean Cafe has been a fixture in the community for 20 years, serving as a gathering place for locals. Recognizing the significance of Molly’s Reach as another community hub, the Bristow siblings saw an opportunity to merge the two establishments.

Despite the enormity of taking over such an iconic location, the Bristows felt a sense of responsibility to uphold the legacy of Molly’s Reach. The new iteration of the restaurant, which will retain its original name, is slated to open by the end of February, offering a revamped dining experience while preserving the historical charm of the building.

The property, which underwent renovations in 2022, seamlessly blends its rich history with modern updates, as evidenced by its appearance on the Fox series Murder in a Small Town. With a sale price of $150,000, the new Molly’s Reach will feature expanded indoor seating, providing patrons with a cozy atmosphere year-round.

Becca Bristow expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received from the community as they embark on this new chapter. The outpouring of encouragement has been a testament to the deep connection between residents and these beloved establishments along the Gibsons waterfront.

As Black Bean Cafe and Molly’s Reach join forces, they aim to continue serving as beacons of community spirit, welcoming locals and visitors alike to enjoy good food and company in a cherished setting.
