NYC sees fewest shootings, murders in recorded history: ‘Historic achievements’

New York City has experienced a historic low in shootings and homicides in the first five months of this year, according to city officials. From January 1 to May 31, there were only 264 recorded shootings and 112 recorded homicides. This marks a significant decrease from the previous lows of 267 shootings in 2018 and 113 homicides in 2014 and 2017.
In the month of May alone, there were only 54 shootings and 18 homicides, which are also record lows. Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat, expressed his pride in these numbers, stating that they reflect the city’s commitment to driving down crime and making the streets safer for its residents. He attributed this success to precision policing, strategic deployment of resources, and the dedication of the NYPD.
One of the key achievements highlighted by Mayor Adams is the removal of over 22,000 illegal guns from the city’s streets since he took office. This includes the confiscation of dangerous ghost guns that pose a threat to the community. The mayor emphasized the importance of investing in young New Yorkers to prevent crime and create opportunities for the next generation.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch also credited the NYPD’s relentless efforts in going after illegal guns and implementing a data-driven policing strategy for the decrease in gun violence. She highlighted the summer violence reduction plan as a bold and aggressive initiative to continue driving safety gains in the city.
Earlier this year, the NYPD reported a nearly 3% decrease in the overall crime index, with reductions in murder, robbery, burglary, grand larceny, and motor vehicle theft. Additionally, crime on the city’s subway system saw a 5.4% reduction for the second consecutive year.
These achievements reflect the city’s dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents. Mayor Adams and the NYPD remain committed to building on this success and implementing strategies to further reduce crime and make New York City a safer place for all.
