$200K worth of supplies distributed to Palm Beach County schools
The annual Tools for Schools program in Palm Beach County is set to provide hundreds of students with free, new school supplies next week. Red Apple Supplies, the Education Foundation of Palm Beach County’s free teacher resource store, has partnered with Publix Super Markets to distribute over $201,000 worth of essential school supplies to teachers from 120 Title I district schools.
Teachers and principals lined up as early as 8 a.m. at the Red Apple supply store in Riviera Beach to receive the supplies from volunteers. The line wrapped around the building and extended down the street, showcasing the high demand for these much-needed supplies. Volunteers worked tirelessly to load cars with supplies while others offered hot chocolate and sweets to those waiting in line.
Education Foundation Chairman, Jim Moore, added to the festive atmosphere by serving as a disc jockey for the event, while a barbershop quartet entertained drivers. Even Santa Claus made a special appearance at the event, spreading holiday cheer to all in attendance.
Palm Beach County Superintendent Michael Burke emphasized the importance of the event, especially for the one in five district students living in poverty. “This goes a long way to make sure kids have the supplies they need to stay in the classroom,” Burke stated. Dwayne Dennard, the principal of Pahokee middle and high schools, echoed Burke’s sentiments, highlighting the crucial need for supplies in his schools where 99% of students are on a free or reduced meal program.
Dennard stressed the impact of the free school supplies on the students’ ability to reach their full potential, noting that without these supplies, some students may struggle to succeed. The supplies distributed included a range of items from notebooks to headphones, all essential for a successful academic year.
Burke confirmed that the supplies will be distributed to students in school next week, ensuring that every student has the tools they need to thrive in the classroom. The generous donations from Publix Super Markets through the Tools for Schools program will undoubtedly make a significant difference in the lives of Palm Beach County students.
