2024 Paris Paralympics: Medal bonuses for Canada

The Canadian Paralympic Committee recently announced that Canadian athletes who competed at the 2024 Paris Paralympics were awarded a total of $535,000 for their outstanding achievements. This marked the inaugural distribution of the Paralympic Performance Recognition program, which was introduced in January 2024.

Under this program, Paralympians receive financial incentives for winning medals, similar to what Canada’s Olympic athletes receive. Gold medalists are awarded $20,000, silver medalists receive $15,000, and bronze medalists earn $10,000. This program will continue to be in place for future Paralympic Games.

Canadian Paralympians had a remarkable performance in Paris, bringing home a total of 29 medals – 10 gold, 9 silver, and 10 bronze. This was Canada’s highest gold medal count since the Beijing 2008 Paralympics and surpassed the team’s 21 medals from the Tokyo Games in 2021.

One of the athletes, Para canoeist Brianna Hennessy, expressed her gratitude for being part of the first Paralympic Games where medal bonuses were awarded to Paralympians, aligning with the recognition given to their Olympic counterparts. She emphasized the significance of this initiative in promoting inclusivity and equality in Canadian sports, acknowledging the sacrifices and challenges that Paralympians overcome to represent their country on the global stage.

Hennessy, who won a silver medal in Paris, had the honor of being Canada’s flag-bearer at the closing ceremony alongside Para swimmer Nicholas Bennett.

The recognition and support provided to Paralympic athletes through programs like the Paralympic Performance Recognition highlight the commitment of Canada to valuing and celebrating the achievements of all its athletes, regardless of their abilities. This initiative not only motivates and rewards Paralympians for their dedication and hard work but also promotes a more inclusive and equitable sporting environment in the country.
