’24 in 24′: Sask. woman’s initiative collects almost 750 kg of food for the community

Children and seniors in the community of Qu’Appelle, Sask., came together this holiday season to spread cheer and support those in need by assembling food hampers. The town and surrounding areas were challenged to donate 24 items in 24 hours to the town’s seniors club, which has been making food hampers for those in need every holiday season. Aimee Proskie, a dedicated community member, spearheaded the 24 in 24 initiative with the goal of giving back to the town of Qu’Appelle as much as possible.
Proskie, along with her partner Ryan Demyen, recently took over the town’s grocery store, Double TT, where they have brought fresh produce back to the community. The store, formerly known as Wilson’s Supermarket, operated as a movie theatre before local man Bill Wilson transformed it into a grocery store. Proskie shared that the store held a special place in the hearts of the community, with many residents having fond memories of purchasing groceries there. Taking over the store meant filling big shoes, but Proskie and Demyen were committed to revitalizing it and providing fresh groceries once again.
The 24 in 24 campaign gained momentum quickly, with the community rallying together to donate an impressive amount of groceries in just eight days. Thirty-six businesses and individuals contributed to the cause, showcasing the generosity and unity of the town. Local Grade 5 and 6 students helped transport the donations to the 50+ club, where seniors and volunteers sorted and packed the items into hampers.
Loretta Bergman, one of the co-ordinators of the 50+ Community Food Bank, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from the community. The hampers not only provided recipients with a Christmas meal but also supplied enough donations to sustain the food bank throughout the year. The 50+ club has expanded its services to assist anyone facing food insecurity in the surrounding municipality, ensuring that no one goes hungry.
Proskie’s dedication to giving back extends beyond the holiday season, as she has initiated other community-building projects with local schools, the fire department, senior complex, and daycare. Her social work background has equipped her with the skills and passion to make a positive impact on the community in various ways. Looking ahead, Proskie envisions making the 24 in 24 campaign an annual tradition, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and unity in achieving greater accomplishments for the town of Qu’Appelle.
