$25K fine for illegal burning in Nova Scotia made permanent

Nova Scotia Government Implements Permanent $25,000 Fine for Illegal Burning

The Nova Scotia government has recently announced a change in provincial regulations regarding illegal burning within the province. According to a government news release, the fine for illegal burning has been permanently set at $25,000, with additional costs bringing the total fine to $28,872.50. This decision comes after the temporary increase in fines in 2023 and 2024 following two major wildfires in 2023.

Natural Resources Minister Tory Rushton expressed the seriousness of the issue, stating, “We’ve made that fine permanent in the regulations to keep signaling how serious we are.”

Important Restrictions and Regulations

It is crucial for residents of Nova Scotia to be aware of the burn restrictions in place. These restrictions are effective from March 15 to October 15, with burning prohibited between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. during this period. After 2 p.m., individuals can refer to the province’s burn map, which indicates daily restrictions based on location.

Furthermore, industrial burning activities such as clearing agricultural land or burning brush require a provincial permit to ensure compliance with regulations and prevent the risk of wildfires.

These regulations and fines underscore the importance of responsible environmental practices and the need to protect the natural landscape of Nova Scotia. By adhering to these guidelines, residents can contribute to the preservation of the province’s natural beauty and prevent the devastating consequences of illegal burning.
