49ers’ general manager drops the hammer on Brock Purdy’s future after disappointing season

The San Francisco 49ers had a challenging season, and quarterback Brock Purdy struggled during his worst stretch as a starter. Despite facing injury issues with key offensive players like Christian McCaffrey and Brandon Aiyuk, Purdy’s numbers in 2024 were notably worse than the previous season. He threw for nearly 400 fewer yards, had a decrease in touchdowns from 31 to 20, and threw one more interception compared to 2023. His quarterback rating also dropped from 113.0 to 96.1.

General manager John Lynch, however, expressed his confidence in Purdy and emphasized that the team sees him as their long-term quarterback. Lynch highlighted Purdy’s leadership and performance, particularly in challenging circumstances throughout the season. Despite missing the playoffs for the first time since 2020, Lynch made it clear that the organization values Purdy and wants him to remain with the team.

Purdy is now eligible for a significant contract extension. As the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, his base salary was less than $1 million last season. Spotrac estimates his market value at $59.7 million annually, making him a candidate for a lucrative four-year deal worth nearly $239 million. If he were to sign such a contract, Purdy would join a select group of quarterbacks in NFL history to surpass the $200 million mark, with all previous contracts starting since 2020.

The potential contract extension for Purdy could solidify his place among the top-paid quarterbacks in the league. Despite his challenging season, the 49ers remain committed to Purdy as their quarterback of the future. Fans will be eagerly watching to see how negotiations unfold and whether Purdy secures a landmark deal in the NFL.
