60 universities under investigation by Trump admin for ‘antisemitic discrimination and harassment’

President Donald Trump’s Department of Education has taken action against 60 universities for allegations of antisemitic discrimination and harassment on their campuses. The announcement comes after a year of relentless antisemitic eruptions that have left Jewish students feeling unsafe and disrupted campus life.

Secretary of Education Linda McMahon expressed disappointment in university leaders for failing to protect Jewish students and called on them to do better. The Department emphasized that federal antidiscrimination laws must be strictly adhered to in order to continue receiving public investments funded by U.S. taxpayers.

The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) sent letters to the 60 higher education institutions warning of potential legal repercussions if they do not fulfill their obligations under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act to protect Jewish students. These universities are currently under investigation for allegations of antisemitic harassment and discrimination stemming from anti-Israel protests following the Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel in October 2023.

The universities under investigation are spread across the country and include prestigious Ivy League schools like Harvard University and Princeton University, as well as major state schools such as the University of Michigan and University of Virginia.

The Trump administration has made investigating campus antisemitism an “immediate priority” and has canceled roughly $400 million in federal grants to Columbia University due to its inaction in addressing harassment of Jewish students. Acting assistant secretary for the OCR, Craig Trainor, revealed that over 140 complaints of antisemitic harassment and violence have been filed with the Biden Education Department.

The move to address campus antisemitism comes as anti-Israel protests have been on the rise, with demonstrations taking place in cities across the country. The Department of Education is urging university leaders to take swift action to protect Jewish students and ensure a safe and inclusive campus environment.
