9 charts show how immigration drove Canada’s population growth

Canada’s population is growing exponentially. Last month it reached the 40 million mark.

The growth has been remarkable over the years, but barely across the country.

That’s partly because Canada’s growth is fueled by immigration, rather than the “natural” birth rate, and immigrants settle far more in some well-known areas than others.

The trend over the past few decades points to the challenges of Canada’s immigration growth: how does a country get newcomers where they are most needed? And how can it help them to successfully establish themselves there?

The federal government plans to bring in historic levels of immigrants in the coming years, and counties and employers are pushing for more workers.

Still, experts question whether the necessary planning has been in place to ensure newcomers can thrive, especially as they increasingly move to communities outside the three major cities of Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.
