US Election 2024

Campaign war begins over Trump’s controversial ‘big beautiful bill’

The House Democrats’ campaign arm has launched a digital ad campaign targeting GOP lawmakers who supported the Republican-crafted domestic policy package. This move comes shortly after President Donald Trump signed the bill into law, which has been dubbed the “big, beautiful bill” by Republicans.

The ads, backed by a modest buy, will focus on 35 Republican-controlled House districts that Democrats are aiming to flip in the upcoming midterm elections. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) has labeled the GOP’s legislation as “the Big, Ugly Bill” and is using it as a focal point in their campaign efforts.

The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) quickly responded to the DCCC’s ads, emphasizing that House Republicans will make this vote a defining issue in the 2026 elections. The political fight over the “big, beautiful bill” has now shifted to the campaign trail, with both parties gearing up for a heated battle.

The new law includes many of President Trump’s campaign promises from 2024 and his second-term priorities, such as tax cuts, immigration reform, defense spending, energy policy, and the debt limit. It extends the president’s 2017 tax cuts, eliminates taxes on tips and overtime pay, and is projected to cut taxes by nearly $4.4 trillion over the next decade.

However, the bill also includes significant changes to Medicaid and food stamp programs, in order to offset the cost of the tax cuts. This restructuring has raised concerns among Democrats, who argue that House Republicans prioritized tax breaks for wealthy donors over the well-being of low-income Americans.

The battle over the bill is not limited to the House, as Senate races are also being influenced by the controversial legislation. Democratic candidates like Rep. Chris Pappas of New Hampshire have criticized the bill for its potential impact on healthcare coverage and food assistance. Meanwhile, Republican candidates like former Sen. Scott Brown support the bill’s focus on providing benefits to those most in need while restricting access for able-bodied individuals.
