Boy, 9, sustains multiple injuries after being mauled by Coyote in Winnipeg

A young boy in Winnipeg suffered multiple injuries when police said he was mauled by a coyote on Saturday night.

Winnipeg police say they responded to a call about a child bitten by a coyote around 6:50 p.m. on Sunny Morning Road in the city’s northeast.

They found that a 15-year-old girl and her nine-year-old brother were walking near Popko Crescent and Knowles Avenue when they noticed the animal.

Police say the coyote started running toward them as they fled, and the boy was mauled.

A local resident chased the coyote away and the boy was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Police say if a coyote approaches you, try to come across as big and loud to scare it off, a practice known as hazing.

Examples of hazing include holding a coat or other item of clothing over your head to appear taller and yelling, police say. A safety whistle is another sound option.

Police say they are cooperating with wildlife officials over the incident.
