Quebec wildfires: Environment Canada lifts province-wide smog warnings
MONTREAL – Environment Canada has lifted the smog warnings that have been in effect for several days in large parts of Quebec.
In parts of northwestern Quebec, including the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region, smog warnings have been downgraded to air quality warnings.
Air quality alerts are also in effect across much of northern Quebec, including areas along James Bay and parts of the far north.
Quebec’s wildfire prevention agency says 139 new fires were reported on Saturday, 95 percent of which were started by lightning strikes.
Of the fires that remain active in the province, it says only three are considered uncontrollable.
The agency, SOPFEU, says it managed to put out a major fire near Lebel-sur-Quévillon, a town in northern Quebec that was evacuated twice in June.
