Check out some of this summer’s best fishing photos from northwestern Ontario

Fishing is a big part of the summer in northwestern Ontario, and anglers from all over the region show off their catches as part of CBC Thunder Bay’s annual Show us Your Fish contest.

We asked for the best shots – from monster pike to small trout – and gave away two rod and reel sets plus a tackle box stocked by our resident angling expert, Gord Ellis.

In the past two weeks, we’ve seen over 130 submissions from listeners far and wide, and we’ve settled on three winners.

Carlo Cantera

Carlo’s smile says it all on this photo of a bass he caught in Kenora. The feeling of catching a fish like that is something we can all relate to.

Shannon Zurevinski

This photo contains an incredible story of Shannon Zurevinski’s and her son Nick’s adventurous capture on Lake of the Woods. It’s so good, we’ll let her tell herself:

“My son Nick bought a $17 Rapala with his first paycheck and wanted to test it off the dock the same night. But he caught it on the bottom. So he ran and packed his bags to duck down and watch if he could see him He dove down ten feet [three metres] and drove it from the rocks.

He then tossed it up so it wouldn’t be caught again and started swimming back with the line in his hand. Then he reached halfway to the surface when a fish grabbed the Rapala.

It was about a foot from his face when he tried to swim quickly back to the dock. He successfully took it in. It was a 16-inch walleye. We laughed about it for hours.”

Andrew Faiers

Andrew Faiers said this year’s photo is from Lucy. He said she loves to fish and always manages to catch the biggest one. Her winning entry is a small 18.5 inch mouth bass weighing 3.5 pounds that she caught on Father’s Day weekend at Sleeping Giant Provincial Park near Thunder Bay.

What a great memory.
