Nova Scotia approves glyphosate spraying of 1,415 hectares
HALIFAX, N.S. — Nova Scotia’s Department of Environment and Climate Change has issued four new approvals for herbicide spraying in areas across the province.
Glyphosate-based products will be sprayed in Cumberland, Annapolis, Kings and Colchester counties.
ARF Enterprises Inc. and J. D. Irving Ltd. hold the approvals for the work, which will see about 1,415 hectares sprayed.
Glyphosate is a widely used broad-spectrum herbicide applied to kill weeds and other vegetation. It was first introduced by Monsanto in 1974 as the active ingredient in their herbicide Roundup,
The work will take place from Monday, Aug. 14 to Friday, Sept. 30.
Additionally, two multi-year corridor spraying approvals were reissued to Davey Tree Expert Co. of Canada and Asplundh Canada, which allow for spraying in Nova Scotia Power’s utility corridor and CN’s rail line.
All approvals include specific terms and conditions that must be met, such as only spraying during a particular range of wind speeds, maintaining separation distances from water and notifying the public about spraying times.
