Man charged with murder in 2022 death of woman in Halifax

Police have charged a man in the death of a woman who was found stabbed on Herring Cove Road in Halifax last year.

Kenneth Wayne Clarke, 40, was arrested last Thursday just before 8 p.m. as he was driving in Halifax. He was later charged with first-degree murder in the death of Chauntel Lizette MacIntyre.

MacIntyre, 37, was found injured at the intersection of Sylvia Avenue and Herring Cove Road at about 12:45 a.m. on May 17, 2022.

She was rushed to hospital but died of her injuries.

Clarke’s arrest came 10 hours after investigators arrested a 31-year-old woman at a home in Halifax. That woman was taken to police headquarters to be questioned, but she was later released without charges being laid.

Const. John MacLeod, spokesman for Halifax Regional Police, said Clarke was known to MacIntyre and the woman who was questioned last week.

Clarke made a brief appearance in Halifax provincial court Monday.

Defence duty counsel Bernie Thibault asked that the case be adjourned for about a month while Clarke applies to Nova Scotia Legal Aid for a lawyer.

Judge Alonzo Wright scheduled the case to return to court Dec. 4 for the purpose of setting dates for a preliminary inquiry.

If Clarke wants bail, he will have to make an application in Nova Scotia Supreme Court.

At the request of prosecutor Shani Frugtniet, the judge ordered Clarke to have no contact with six potential Crown witnesses.

At the time of MacIntyre’s killing, police said they didn’t believe it was a random incident.

MacLeod said investigators think there are people who still have information about her death and are asking them to contact police.

According to court records, Clarke was sentenced in July 2010 on charges of false pretence and fraud. He has no other criminal convictions on his record.
