Encampment tents destroyed by fire in Halifax on Tuesday morning

Five tents and various items in and around them burned at encampment under a Halifax overpass Tuesday morning.

The fire under the approach to the Macdonald bridge off Barrington Street was reported a bit before 9:30 a.m.

Deputy chief Dave Hall said crews found the fire well underway.

“All the contents around them also burned,” Hall said. “There was no one around the area so there were no injuries.”

He said the tents and the items in and around them were totally consumed by the flames.

“We have no idea what the cause of the fire was, because there is nothing left to look at,” he said.

He said there was nothing obvious like portable barbecues or heaters.

The on-ramp was closed for a short time because of the fire as the crews worked at the scene and thick smoke shrouded the ramp.
