No injuries in tent fire at Halifax’s Grand Parade

A tent in the homeless encampment at Halifax’s Grand Parade was damaged in a fire Saturday morning.

Halifax Fire district chief Jeff Paris says firefighters were called at around 8 a.m. to the site, and found fire burning inside the tent.

The tent itself suffered only minor damage, Paris said, but it was the contents inside that burned. Firefighters did use a hose to put out the remains of the fire.

There were no injuries. The cause of the fire is undetermined.

There have been several concerns and issues lately around the homeless encampments around the city. In November, a fire at an encampment below the Mcdonald Bridge destroyed several tents and belongings. About a week later, a man was found dead in a tent in Dartmouth.

And this month a man was injured and is in hospital after the tent he was in collapsed under the weight of wet snow, trapping him.

Some members of the public have started buying and fundraising for more durable ice-fishing tents to try to counter the collapse issue.
