UPDATED: RCMP identify impaired driving suspect who ran over officer’s foot while fleeing traffic stop in New Minas, N.S.

NEW MINAS, N.S. — Police in New Minas have identified the suspect of an assault on a police officer in the community.

On Jan. 18, just before 2 a.m., Kings District RCMP stopped a blue 2010 Hyundai Tuscon after noticing it driving erratically on Highbury Road.

During the incident, in order to determine if the driver was impaired, the officer asked the man to get out of the vehicle for breath samples.

Mounties say the driver refused to do so and fled the area in the vehicle, running over the officers’ foot in the process.

Another traffic stop was attempted, but the driver refused to stop.

Eventually, the suspect vehicle appeared to have mechanical issues and came to a stop an the ramp for Exit 12, at which point the driver fled on foot.

RCMP tried searching the area with help from K9 services, but the suspect remains at large.

The suspect vehicle was impounded for forensic analysis, and the RCMP officer was taken to hospital for treatment of injuries and has since been released.

A day later, police have identified the suspect.
