Woman injured in Cape Breton explosion has died: report

SYDNEY, N.S. — A woman who was seriously injured in Friday night’s explosion at the Silver Birch Manor on Reeves Street in Sydney had died.

A close family member confirmed the news to the Cape Breton Post and identified her as 73-year-old  Glenda Orychock. She died Sunday.

Cape Breton Regional Police, ambulances, fire services, and the Cape Breton Regional Municipality’s Emergency Management Organization (EMO) responded to a scene late Friday afternoon of a “serious incident, possible explosion and/or structure fire, with reported structural damage” at the Silver Birch Manor building on Reeves Street.

The building was initially evacuated with many residents returning home Sunday.

While there is an investigation into what caused the explosion, the regional fire department said it appears as though there was a propane leak that got into one of the units.

Exceessive snow on the roof is said to have compromised the propane connection.
