A water main break at the QEII Halifax Infirmary has led to all elective and non-urgent surgeries at the hospital on Wednesday to be cancelled and rescheduled.

The break is affecting buildings including the Halifax Infirmary, Veterans Memorial Building, Abbie J. Lane and power plant. CBC News has contacted Nova Scotia Health for comment.

In a news release, the health authority said there was no running water for drinking or for flushing toilets. There is hand sanitizer at the site, the release said, and efforts are underway to get drinking water and potable hand-washing stations and washrooms set up as soon as possible.

In addition to elective and non-urgent surgeries being cancelled and rescheduled, outpatient blood collection is closed at the Halifax Infirmary for Wednesday. Patients can go to the Bayers Road blood collection facility at 7071 Bayers Rd. at the time of their scheduled appointment, or they can call to set up a new appointment.

The emergency department is open, but patients without emergency concerns are being asked to visit another emergency department or virtual/community access point.

Patients with other scheduled appointments for Wednesday will be contacted to relocate them, reschedule them, or hold them virtually.
