On Saturday night, shortly after 9 p.m. ET, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau delivered a passionate speech on Parliament Hill announcing Canada’s response to the 25 per cent tariff U.S. President Donald Trump is imposing on most Canadian goods. In a transcript of his remarks, Prime Minister Trudeau expressed his disappointment in the decision made by the United States and emphasized the potential consequences for both Canadians and Americans.
Trudeau began his speech by addressing Americans directly, highlighting the longstanding partnership and friendship between the two countries. He emphasized the potential negative impact the tariffs could have on American jobs, manufacturing facilities, and everyday costs for American citizens. Trudeau stressed the importance of working together and finding solutions that benefit both nations, rather than resorting to punitive measures.
The Prime Minister reminded Americans of the shared history of cooperation and assistance between the two countries, from military alliances to humanitarian efforts. He urged President Trump to consider the value of partnering with Canada to build a strong and secure North American economy, rather than escalating tensions through tariffs.
Trudeau also addressed concerns about border security and the opioid crisis, emphasizing Canada’s commitment to working collaboratively with the United States to address these issues. He highlighted the measures Canada has already taken to combat illegal drug trafficking and pledged to continue working towards a safer and more secure border.
In response to the U.S. tariffs, Trudeau announced that Canada would be imposing counter-tariffs on $155 billion worth of American goods. The retaliatory measures would include immediate tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods, followed by additional tariffs on $125 billion worth of products in the coming weeks. The list of targeted American goods included a wide range of items, from beverages and food products to household appliances and sports equipment.
Trudeau emphasized that Canada stood united in its response to the tariffs, with support from government officials, businesses, labor organizations, and citizens across the country. He called on Canadians to support one another during this challenging time and to choose Canadian products and businesses whenever possible. Trudeau encouraged Canadians to show solidarity and strength in the face of adversity, emphasizing the importance of standing together as a nation.
As the Prime Minister concluded his speech, he reiterated his commitment to supporting Canadians and ensuring that no one is left behind. He urged Canadians to embrace their differences and unite in their love for their country, pledging to work together towards a brighter future for all.
