Newsom signs $50M ‘Trump-proofing’ legislative package

California Governor Gavin Newsom recently signed a $50 million special legislative package aimed at “Trump-proofing” the state from the policies of former President Donald Trump. This move comes as part of Newsom’s efforts to protect the civil rights of California’s most vulnerable residents.

The bill, which was proposed by Newsom and passed by Democrats in the state Senate and Assembly, includes funding for legal services programs that support individuals with disabilities, homeless youth, victims of human trafficking and wage theft, people facing unlawful evictions, and immigrants. Newsom emphasized that none of the funding in the bill would be used for immigration-related legal services for noncitizens convicted of serious or violent felonies.

A significant portion of the package, $25 million, has been allocated to the California Department of Justice to support legal battles against federal policies implemented by the Trump administration, particularly in areas such as environmental regulations and illegal immigration. An additional $25 million will go to legal aid groups to assist illegal immigrants facing potential deportation.

During Trump’s first term, Newsom initiated numerous lawsuits against the administration, showcasing his willingness to challenge federal policies that he deemed harmful to California and its residents. Despite these confrontations, Newsom has also engaged in discussions with Trump to secure federal disaster relief for areas affected by devastating wildfires in the state.

In response to Newsom’s “Trump-proofing” efforts, Trump criticized the governor, accusing him of obstructing progress and using the term to hinder efforts to “Make California Great Again.” Despite the political tensions between the two leaders, Newsom remains focused on working across party lines to ensure that survivors of natural disasters receive the necessary resources and support.

As California continues to navigate its relationship with the federal government, Newsom’s actions reflect a commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of all residents, regardless of their background or immigration status. By prioritizing legal services for vulnerable populations and advocating for disaster relief, Newsom seeks to uphold California’s values of inclusivity and support for those in need.
