Disgraced ex-Congressman Weiner receives donation from unexpected New Yorker

Former Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner has received surprising donations to his campaign for City Council of New York City from his ex-wife, Huma Abedin, and her sister, Heba Abedin, despite the turmoil caused by Weiner’s past sex scandals. Abedin donated $175 to Weiner’s campaign on March 13, while her sister, Heba Abedin, donated $150 on December 29, 2024, according to a recent review of New York City campaign finance reports by Fox News Digital.

Weiner, who previously served in the City Council from 1992 to 1998 before his political career was derailed by controversy, launched his latest campaign for the position in December 2024. His tumultuous past includes a scandal in which he posted a photo of himself in his underwear on social media, leading to his resignation from Congress in 2011. This was followed by further scandals, culminating in Weiner being charged with transferring obscene material to a minor in 2017 after engaging in inappropriate communication with a 15-year-old girl. He was subsequently sentenced to 21 months in prison.

Despite the challenges faced in their relationship, Huma Abedin has continued to support Weiner’s political endeavors. In a 2021 interview with CBS “Sunday Morning,” Abedin revealed that the anger and pain caused by Weiner’s scandals had almost destroyed her. She emphasized that she could no longer live in that space, leading to her decision to file for divorce on the same day Weiner pleaded guilty and was sentenced to prison. The couple, however, has continued to co-parent their son and were seen together at the Inner Circle charity show in 2023.

In a surprising turn of events, Abedin announced her engagement to Alex Soros, the chairman of Open Society Foundations and son of billionaire George Soros, on social media in July 2024. The couple is set to tie the knot this summer, marking a new chapter in Abedin’s personal life.

Weiner’s attempts at political comebacks have been marred by continued scandal and controversy. Following his resignation from Congress, he made a failed bid for mayor in 2013, only to be embroiled in another sexting scandal under the pseudonym “Carlos Danger.” Further revelations of explicit photos and inappropriate behavior continued to tarnish Weiner’s reputation, leading to his indictment and eventual release from prison in 2019.

Despite the tumultuous nature of Weiner’s past, Abedin and her sister’s donations to his campaign signal a continued support for his political aspirations. The complexities of their relationship and the impact of Weiner’s scandals continue to be a point of interest for observers and voters alike.
