A hydrogen-heated home in Alberta lays ground for future low-carbon communities

A new innovative home in Sherwood Park, just east of Edmonton, is turning heads with its state-of-the-art furnace fueled by pure hydrogen. This demonstration home, a joint project between Atco and Qualico, is the first of its kind in Canada and aims to showcase the potential of hydrogen gas for heating buildings in a safe and effective manner.

Hydrogen, known for its clean energy properties and lack of direct greenhouse gas emissions, has been gaining global interest in recent years. While most hydrogen production globally is currently derived from fossil fuels like natural gas, there is a growing interest in using renewable sources for hydrogen production.

In Alberta, where the electricity grid is under pressure due to the rapid phaseout of coal-fired generation, hydrogen home heating is seen as a viable solution. With the province experiencing a boom in wind and solar energy generation, the intermittent nature of these renewable sources poses challenges during periods of peak demand. To avoid blackouts and ensure a reliable heating solution, hydrogen can be transported through existing natural gas pipelines, offering a cost-effective alternative to massive grid expansion.

Although hydrogen home heating has been tested in other jurisdictions with mixed results, Atco’s director of utility hydrogen strategy and decarbonization, Greg Caldwell, assures that when done correctly, hydrogen heating is just as safe as natural gas. While the cost of hydrogen fuel is currently higher than natural gas, advancements in production technology and competition in the market are expected to drive costs down in the future.

The demonstration house in Sherwood Park serves as a beacon of possibility for residential heating with hydrogen, showcasing the efficiency and viability of this alternative fuel source. As more hydrogen production facilities come online in Alberta, the future looks bright for hydrogen as a clean energy solution for home heating.
