A little cold didn’t hurt anybody: Residents turnout for early morning winter walk in Acadia Park despite freezing temperature

WESTVILLE, N.S. — Despite frigid temperatures and wind that burned the face, 20 people joined Hike Nova Scotia for an early morning walk through Acadia Park on Wednesday morning, Jan. 24.

The turnout for Melanie Dash, Westville’s Recreation and Active Living Coordinator, is much more than she expected, given the weather.

“The mayor asked me what I was thinking,” Dash said with a laugh. “I just told him I don’t control the weather. I just plan the events.”

The Acadia Park walk hosted by Hike Nova Scotia is one of a series of guided walks and hikes the organization is hosting this winter. During the walk, participants were encouraged to take photos as part of a Westville Recreation hosting photography contest.

Many participants bundled up and didn’t complain about the cold; instead, they enjoyed the opportunity to appreciate the sun and get some exercise.

The Acadia Park guided walk was the first Hike Nova Scotia walk Pat Dean has done, and it was the first long walk she did after her knee replacement last February. She said that she used to walk faster than she does now, but she enjoyed the opportunity to return to an activity to did quite often before her surgery. - Angela Capobianco
