A wildlife sanctuary’s sweetest pair: The story of Truffles and Little Red

Truffles, a former emotional support pig, has found a new companion in a chicken at the New Beginnings Animal Sanctuary in Summerland, B.C. After being taken in by the B.C. SPCA earlier this year, Truffles was in need of a new home due to his previous family moving away. Jane Long-Haggerty, the president of the sanctuary, was thrilled to provide him with a permanent residence.
Upon his arrival at the sanctuary, Truffles was quite shy and hesitant around other animals. However, one chicken named Little Red caught his attention and the two quickly formed a strong bond. Little Red would hop on Truffles’ back to groom him and the pair would spend their days together, eating and basking in the sun. Long-Haggerty noted that while it’s common for pigs and chickens to cohabitate, the deep friendship between Truffles and Little Red was truly special.
Truffles’ story had gained attention when he first arrived at the SPCA, as he was significantly overweight at over 300 pounds. His diet consisted mainly of unhealthy foods, but with the help of the sanctuary staff, he is now on a weight loss journey. Truffles is adapting to a healthier diet and regular exercise routine, and his friendly demeanor makes him a joy to be around.
Long-Haggerty hopes that Truffles’ story will serve as a reminder of the importance of proper pet care and the power of friendship. She believes that if a chicken and a pig can form such a strong bond, humans should be able to get along as well. The heartwarming friendship between Truffles and Little Red is a testament to the positive impact of companionship and care in all forms of life.
