Add your physical driver’s license to your Apple Wallet

Apple has made it possible for you to store a virtual copy of your trusty DMV driver’s license in your Apple Wallet, and Arizona and Georgia are the first states to adopt this feature. With your driver’s license stored in your Apple Wallet, you can now leave your house with just your phone, making it an ideal solution for commuters and travelers. What’s more, your digital ID might even be more secure than your physical ID, thanks to the newest ISO 18013-5 security requirements and features for all digital IDs.
At the time of publishing, there is support for digital IDs in Apple Wallet in 10 states and territories, with 10 more states currently exploring the option. These are the states that currently allow you to store your digital driver’s license in your Apple Wallet: Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Maryland, New Mexico, Ohio, and Puerto Rico.
Storing your driver’s license in your Apple Wallet can be more secure than carrying a physical card that can easily be lost. Additionally, your digital ID doesn’t display as much personal information as a physical ID card. With digital IDs stored in your Apple Wallet, only your full name is visible. To display additional information such as your address and date of birth, you must authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID.
When using your digital ID with Apple Wallet from your iPhone or Apple Watch, you simply hold the device near the reader, and a screen will appear showing the information you will share. You then double-tap the side button to approve it, similar to using Apple Pay.
Digital IDs only transfer the necessary information, making it convenient for security checks without revealing unnecessary personal details. At present, police agencies do not accept digital IDs as driver’s licenses, but the TSA and some concert venues do. In addition, apps requiring an ID, such as car rental services or alcohol delivery, can use the information stored in your Apple Wallet for age verification.
To add your driver’s license to your Apple Wallet, follow these steps: open the Wallet app on your iPhone, tap the Add button, select Driver’s License or State ID, choose your state, and take photos of your license and yourself for facial recognition.
If you encounter any issues adding your driver’s license to your Apple Wallet, it may be due to your state not yet supporting the feature or a temporary Apple server outage. Contact your local DMV or state office for assistance.
Adding your digital ID to your Apple Wallet can simplify your life and offer enhanced security features. As digital IDs become more advanced and widely adopted, it will be easier to leave your house with just your phone or watch. Consider adding your digital ID to your Apple Wallet for added convenience and peace of mind.
