Additional $3M pledged for new Sydney Curling Club, construction could start this fall

The Sydney Curling Club is celebrating a major milestone as they move closer to building a new, modern facility thanks to funding from both the federal and Nova Scotia governments. With $10 million committed last fall by the federal government and an additional $3 million from the Nova Scotia government, the club is well on its way to making their dream a reality.
Club president Travis Stone expressed mixed emotions about leaving their current 115-year-old building on George Street in downtown Sydney, but excitement for the new location at the corner of Ferry Street and Stable Drive in Open Hearth Park. Stone acknowledged the sentimental attachment members have to the current building, describing it as a cozy second home. However, he emphasized the need for a new facility to accommodate the growing popularity of the sport.
The new facility will feature six sheets for curling, an increase from the four available in the current building. Additionally, a community meeting room for events will be added to the new space. Stone highlighted the demand for more space due to the sport’s increasing popularity, especially after hosting prestigious events like the Scotties and the women’s world championship.
Cape Breton East MLA Brian Comer emphasized the importance of the new facility as a hub for community engagement and socialization. He noted the impact of COVID-19 restrictions on people’s ability to socialize and be active, underscoring the need for safe spaces where individuals can come together.
The estimated cost of the new facility is around $18 million, with the club already having some funds saved and planning to use the proceeds from selling the existing building towards construction costs. Discussions are also underway to secure a contribution from the Cape Breton Regional Municipality to support the project.
The Sydney Curling Club is hopeful to begin construction in the fall, with a target opening date in 2027. The new facility promises to not only meet the needs of current members but also attract new enthusiasts to the beloved Canadian sport. As the club prepares for this exciting new chapter, the community eagerly anticipates the completion of the state-of-the-art curling and recreation facility in Open Hearth Park.
