AFC Toronto lands Canadian forward Mya Jones on season-long loan from NWSL’s San Diego Wave
Mya Jones, a former Canadian youth international soccer player, has made a bold decision to pursue her budding professional career on home soil in Toronto. Despite the frigid temperatures and multiple snowstorms in the city, Jones is excited to be back in Canada and playing for AFC Toronto in the Northern Super League on a season-long loan.
The 23-year-old Calgary native had a successful rookie season with the NWSL’s San Diego Wave before making the move to Toronto. Jones, who has represented Canada at the U15, U17, and U20 levels, brings a wealth of experience and talent to the team.
Jones was drafted 42nd overall by the Wave in the 2024 NWSL Draft and made 12 starts and 19 appearances in her debut season, scoring two goals. Prior to her professional career, Jones played college soccer at the University of Memphis, where she scored 26 goals and assisted on 27 more in 93 matches. She was a key player in the Tigers’ success, winning three AAC titles and making five NCAA tournament appearances.
AFC Toronto’s Sporting Director, Billy Wilson, is thrilled to have Jones on board, praising her versatility and goal-scoring ability. Jones describes herself as a hard worker and a creative player, always looking to make an impact on the field. She credits her time in the NWSL for teaching her the importance of professionalism and good habits at the highest level.
Jones has her sights set on representing the Canadian national team and sees her move to AFC Toronto as a crucial step in her development. She joins teammate Emma Regan, with whom she has played on youth national teams, in pursuing national team ambitions.
While there was speculation about Jones joining an NSL club, she ultimately chose AFC Toronto for the opportunity to play in front of Canadian fans and help build the team from the ground up. Despite the distance from her hometown of Calgary, Jones’s family is supportive of her decision and eager to watch her play.
The NSL, Canada’s first women’s professional soccer league, kicks off its inaugural season in April, with AFC Toronto set to face off against teams like Halifax Tides FC, Ottawa Rapid FC, Montreal Roses FC, Calgary Wild FC, and Vancouver Wild FC. The league’s schedule will be announced on February 20, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for women’s soccer in Canada.
