After heavy snow, N.B. sees temperatures plunge, especially in northwest

The recent heavy snowfall in New Brunswick has caused widespread disruptions across the province, with schools closed and messy roads making travel difficult. As cleanup efforts continue, temperatures are expected to plummet below -20 degrees Celsius in many areas, with the Edmundston region under an extreme cold warning predicting a nighttime low of -27 and a wind chill of -38.

Similar extreme cold warnings have been issued for Campbellton, Grand Falls, Mount Carleton, and Restigouche County, where very cold temperatures and wind chill pose a risk of health issues such as frostbite and hypothermia. Residents are urged to take precautions and stay indoors if possible to avoid exposure to the harsh conditions.

In Bathurst, Fredericton, and western New Brunswick, overnight temperatures are forecasted to drop to -20 degrees or lower, further exacerbating the cold snap. Drivers are advised to exercise caution on the roads, with some highways still listed as snow-covered or partially covered. Travel should be limited to essential journeys only to ensure the safety of all road users.

Despite the challenges posed by the winter weather, residents are coming together to clear snow and ensure the smooth operation of essential services. As the cleanup efforts continue, it is important for everyone to stay informed of weather updates and follow any advisories issued by local authorities. With proper preparation and cooperation, the community can weather the storm and emerge stronger on the other side.
