AG Bondi addresses antisemitism incidents, rejects SPLC as DOJ resource

Attorney General Pam Bondi recently spoke at a House hearing about the Department of Justice’s efforts to safeguard religious freedom rights. She emphasized that the DOJ is committed to protecting the rights of all religions, including Judaism and Islam. Bondi highlighted the challenges faced by various religious communities, such as delays in the opening of mosques during the previous administration.

During the hearing, Rep. Riley Moore inquired about the resources needed to address anti-Christian bias within the department. Bondi assured lawmakers that the DOJ would work tirelessly to protect the religious freedoms of all Americans, regardless of their faith.

One significant incident Bondi referenced was the tragic murder of two individuals at the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C. The assailant, who shouted “free Palestine” during the attack, underscored the rise in antisemitic violence. Bondi also mentioned the closure of religious buildings in certain states as part of COVID-19 protocols, highlighting the importance of religious freedom even during times of crisis.

Bondi commended the DOJ Civil Rights Division for its efforts to combat discrimination and protect religious freedom. She specifically praised division head Harmeet Dhillon for reshaping the division’s focus to prioritize the protection of individuals from all religious backgrounds.

The hearing also touched on a controversial internal memo from the FBI’s Richmond Field Office, which identified a group of Catholics as “radical-traditionalists” with extremist tendencies. The memo sparked backlash and was later retracted by the FBI. Bondi assured lawmakers that under her leadership, the DOJ would not rely on organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center for assessments.
