AI could transform how we follow hurricanes. But experts say the work needs

Some experts believe that an infusion of artificial intelligence (AI) will give an important boost to the current monitoring of the hurricane, although more development and research is needed.

AI is currently being integrated into weather forecast systems around the world, also in the US National Hurricane Center and the European Center for Weather forecasts with average distance.

“It will be the next transformation in meteorology,” said Jim Abraham, a meteorologist and founder of the Canadian Hurricane Center, said What the hell Gasthost Portia Clark.

Tracking and strength

Richard Turner is part of a team at Cambridge University that has developed Aardvark weather, a fully AI-driven weather forecast system, the results of which were published in nature Earlier this year.

Turner says that the best current weather forecast systems analyze millions of data points about the current state of the atmosphere, which requires huge supercomputers that large teams of people need to operate. They look at data about the current state of the atmosphere and calculate how it will evolve.

Instead of looking at all that current information, an AI model is trained in decades of Real-World weather data, so that it can see a pattern and predict what will happen next. This requires considerably fewer resources to work.

For example, Turner has trained Aardvark -weather to take data from satellites and weather stations to predict what weeks later would happen.

“That can be competitive with or even better than these large physical models, but stand up as a fraction of the costs,” Turner said.

A year after Post-Tropical Storm Fiona destroyed more than 100 houses in Port Aux Basques, NL, the community has still been rebuilt and the residents are trying to heal.

For hurricanes there are two main points for those who guard the storm: where it goes and how powerful it is.

Turner says that tracking is the bread and butter of the AI.

“The AI models are surprisingly good. They can actually predict where the eye of the hurricane will go. And they are actually on the same footing, if not a bit more accurate than, the best hurricane prediction centers in the world,” Turner said.

But they are not so good at predicting the intensity of a storm, such as the wind speeds, which is important to determine how to respond to an incoming hurricane.

“The AI-based methods on machine learning have not been good at that. So there is still work to be done in this room,” Turner said.

The future of AI and Hurricanes

Turner says that although AI is not perfect, it develops at a faster pace than other prediction technologies.

Often the development and improvement of a regular weather forecast system takes years.

“In the Machine Learning models you can add new data, you can configure it again, you can retrain it all within a few days,” he said.

Even while developments continue, Abraham does not expect that AI will completely replace the traditional prediction. The two need each other, he says, because AI depends on data collected from traditional predictions.

“It will entail at least five years of testing, I think, to thoroughly evaluate these things thoroughly and to develop them well so that they can become operational, reliable systems that we are dependent on day to day,” Turner said.

“That includes performing the physical systems – the current approach – in addition to the AI approaches for several years to ensure that they are safe.”

But that development runs the risk of delaying, While American climate organizations are being cut under the government of US President Donald Trump.

Hundreds of weather forecasters were cut in February from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa) in the name of cutbacks on the budget.

“The data that people such as Noaa offer … In an open way have been completely invaluable for training these systems,” Turner said.

With the potential of AI in the prediction, there is hope that people like Peggy Savery, who live on the path of these powerful storms and run the risk of taking on the dupee of the damage, may be better prepared when the next strikes.

“We urgently need these prediction systems and we need them to be better so that we can alleviate steps,” Turner said.
