Airline passenger charged for allegedly threatening pilot, cabin crew

A passenger on a New Jersey airline flight allegedly made violent threats towards a flight attendant and pilot, leading to a federal charge against him. Luis Vaquero, 27, from Passaic County, is accused of causing chaos on a flight from Miami to Newark, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey.

The incident reportedly began shortly after takeoff when Vaquero started threatening and harassing passengers, including making threats of physical violence towards a disabled minor and mocking a group of Jewish passengers. He also threatened a flight crew member who refused to serve him alcohol after the beverage service window closed, saying, “You better watch out, s— is gonna happen to you.”

Upon landing at Newark Liberty International Airport, flight attendants alerted law enforcement. Vaquero then forced his way to the front of the plane, banging on the flight deck door and demanding to see the pilot. He allegedly yelled threats at the flight attendant and pilot, standing six inches from the pilot’s face until law enforcement intervened.

Vaquero has been charged with interference with flight crew members and attendants by assault or intimidation. He appeared in court on Monday and was released. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.

Acting Special Agent in Charge Terence Reilly expressed concern over the incident, stating that Vaquero’s behavior created tension and fear for both passengers and crew members. The FBI Newark issued a warning to others who may engage in similar behavior, emphasizing that they are breaking federal law and will be brought to justice.
